Ghost Hunting Equipment REVIEWS

Modern technological equipment has proved to be something of a boon in the aid to ghost hunting in recent years. It must be remembered however that there is no replacement, as yet, for the old fashioned methods that the various forms of mediumship can apply.

The first and obvious piece of equipment is a torch. What is not widely known, or used if known, is the use of transparent coloured lenses. A sudden flash of light in the eyes in a pitch dark room can render a person blind for several seconds, sometimes longer, and is not at all amusing. Plastic film which can be easily cut with scissors is best and fitted inside the lens glass. Blue is used for indoor work and red for outside.

There are different schools of thought on whether digital or conventional film-loaded cameras are best for on-site investigative work. Images taken with a digital camera can certainly be easily manipulated on a computer in order to falsify a true image, and a 35mm camera does have hard evidence by way of a negative. Honestly used both produce excellent results. Images taken of orbs, or light anomalies seem to be caught more readily using a digital camera. Some cameras now have a ‘CCF Chip’ build into the camera. This eradicates dust orbs from the photo, so when you do capture an orb, it is less likely to be dust.

What is considered these days as essential items are an E.M.F meter, a digital thermometer, E.V.P recorder, motion sensors, camcorder and tripod, digital thermal imaging camera, (out of reach of the normal paranormal group @ £20,000!) audio recording devices such as MP3 player/recorder or old-fashioned tape recorder and two-way radios

EMF Meter

A small hand-held battery-powered instrument used to detect the presence of electro-magnetic fields often associated with the presence of spirits or ghosts in haunted locations.
Spirits apparently manifest themselves using a build up electrical energy, which can sometimes be attributed to why batteries get drained. If this is the case, a decent E.M.F detector can show you this build up of electrical charge. You have to take into account the fact that E.M.F meters can be affected by things such as power cables, plug sockets and even mobile phones, hence the reason it is vital to take baseline tests before beginning any investigation.

EVP recording equipment

Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) is the recording of intelligible voices on an audio recording medium that has no known physical explanation. The voices are thought to be from the Spirits of deceased people. Any audio recording equipment will suffice to record EVP. Some people appear to be better at recording EVP than others. With patience and especially good listening techniques, it should be possible to record and listen to the EVP messages. Probably the best recording instrument these days is the MP3 player/recorder, especially the type with the voice/noise activated control. This saves the laborious task of having to sit listening to 1/2/3 hours of 'recording' just to find nothing recorded. With voice activation control anything caught ‘on tape’ is there right at the beginning of the recording.

The recorded voices may be very quiet and are often difficult to hear and understand at first, but with perseverance can be heard and even be distinguished as male or female. Messages may be spoken very quickly, usually just a few words and normally lasting only a few seconds. The worst thing to happen to the image of EVP recording was the film "White Noise" which portrayed EVP as possibly something to be afraid of. We found this
EVP guide which might help explain how you can experiment with EVP yourself.

Negative ION Detector

Another theory surrounding paranormal activity is that spiritual activity creates electrical energy which causes negative ions in the air. This can be caused naturally by things such as lightening strikes also.

Motion Detectors

Useful when setting up trigger objects or locked off camera’s in an attempt to catch any evidence on film. These will sound an alarm should the beam be broken, and you can be sure no-one has been and tampered with the experiments. They can be manually controlled or by remote control, remote is definitely handy if you have a very active spirit!

Thermometers

One of the main pieces of equipment used in base line checks of all areas reportedly experiencing paranormal activity. Essential for taking the temperature in a room, and an easy way of checking out cold spots or sudden drops or rises in temperature. Air temperature thermometers are excellent for checking the air temperature of a room, or cold spots etc. The probe on the end (usually at the end of a piece of wire or extendable ‘aerial’ are held out and the temperature of the air around is taken. Ideally all equipment of this nature should have a back light display for ease or reading in dark places.

Infra red thermometers give you the temperature of whatever the beam touches, so it cant give you the temperature of a room, but should someone comment on they are feeling cold/hot, for example, could be investigated using this device.

Paranormal Investigators Tip:

The Drained Battery Phenomena
Some paranormal investigators have reported battery-powered equipment to "go flat" (batteries lose their power) for no apparent reason when working in a haunted location. This can happen, even when batteries have just been replaced. Why not employ standard scientific procedure and use a "control" experiment alongside the investigation equipment? In this scenario, a charged "standalone" battery could be independently monitored using a voltmeter (or multi-meter). Voltmeters typically have very high input impedance, which could not cause or explain a sudden discharge of the battery being monitored. Such an experiment could easily be arranged with a low cost multi-meter  a PP3 battery and a PP3 battery clip.
